The survey, conducted among nearly 20,000 adults, underscores the severity of the affordability crisis that Americans are facing.
What makes this particularly fascinating is the broader implications it has on society. Health care spending is rising, and this is not solely due to the cost of healthcare itself, but also because of the increasing demand for healthcare services. As Tim Lash, president of West Health, points out, "It's that we use more and more health care as Americans." This raises a deeper question about the state of public health and the factors contributing to the decline in Americans' health.
Take, for instance, the story of Sheila Nesbit, a recently retired librarian. Nesbit, who lives in a Chicago suburb, has had to make tough choices due to the high cost of healthcare. She discovered that Medicare coverage fell short compared to her job-based insurance plan. As a result, she has had to skip meals, not take her prescribed medications consistently, and even lower her home's thermostat to save money. Her story is a stark reminder of the real-life impact of this crisis.
While those with lower incomes are disproportionately affected, even middle-class and upper-middle-class Americans are not immune. They too are making difficult decisions, such as driving less and borrowing money to cover healthcare expenses. A separate West Health-Gallup Center survey found that healthcare costs have led to the postponement of major life events for tens of millions of Americans. This includes delaying medical treatment, putting off buying a new home, and even postponing retirement.
In my opinion, the situation is set to worsen in the coming months and years. With Republican-led cuts to federal healthcare support and the expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act premium subsidies, millions more are expected to become uninsured. This will undoubtedly lead to even more people facing these difficult tradeoffs.
From my perspective, this crisis highlights the urgent need for systemic changes in the healthcare system. It's not just about the cost of healthcare, but also about the broader issues of accessibility and the overall health of the population. We need to take a step back and think about the long-term implications of this crisis and work towards sustainable solutions.
