Iowa State Coach T.J. Otzelberger's Post-Game Comments After a Surprising Loss to BYU
In a stunning turn of events, the Iowa State Cyclones, who were projected to be a top seed in the NCAA tournament, suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of the BYU Cougars. The game, played at the Marriott Center, showcased the Cougars' determination and resilience as they secured a 10-point victory over the highly-ranked Cyclones.
Following the loss, Coach Otzelberger shared his insights with reporters, highlighting the key factors that led to the unexpected outcome. He emphasized the importance of aggression and physicality, stating, 'They were the more aggressive team for most of the game, coming out with physicality.'
Otzelberger acknowledged the Cyclones' achievements but also stressed the need to match their opponents' intensity. He said, 'We told our guys in the locker room, what we've accomplished is great, but we must be ready to face anyone's best shot every night.'
The Cyclones struggled to regain the lead after halftime, and despite a strong second-half performance, BYU consistently responded. Coach Otzelberger attributed this to their physicality and defensive prowess, noting, 'When we were more physical and aggressive, we started generating turnovers and taking control.'
One standout performer for BYU was AJ Dybantsa, who dominated the game with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists. Coach Otzelberger praised Dybantsa's performance, saying, 'He's a great player, and we need to be more aggressive in our defense against him from the start.'
The most impressive aspect of Dybantsa's performance was his defensive skills, particularly his smothering defense of Iowa State's leading scorer, Milan Momcilovic. Dybantsa limited Momcilovic's scoring to just five points, holding him to 1 of 5 shooting from beyond the arc. Coach Otzelberger commended Dybantsa's two-way play, stating, 'He's a tremendous player, and we have to give him credit.'
Despite the loss, Iowa State remains a strong contender with a 23-4 record and 10-4 in Big 12 play. However, Coach Otzelberger acknowledged the challenge ahead to regain the top seed status. He concluded, 'We know we need to bring that same physical toughness mentality on the road to turn things around. When we did that tonight in short bursts, we had success. We need to do it more consistently.'
