The NBA trade deadline is upon us, and the Atlanta Hawks just made a surprising move! They've traded away Vit Krejci, a promising young guard, to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Duop Reath and some valuable draft assets.
But here's where it gets interesting:
The Hawks, who recently acquired Corey Kispert, seem to have deemed Krejci expendable. Krejci, a 6'8" sharpshooter, has been a solid contributor this season, averaging 9.0 points and shooting an impressive 42.3% from beyond the arc. With a very team-friendly contract, he's a steal for the Blazers, who desperately need help with their three-point shooting, currently ranking last in the league at 33.6%.
In return, the Hawks get their own 2027 second-round pick and New York's 2030 second-round pick, both previously owned by Portland. They also acquire Reath, a 6'9" big man who recently underwent season-ending foot surgery. And this is the part most fans are curious about: Will the Hawks waive Reath to open up a roster spot, or will they keep him for the future? Only time will tell.
This trade also raises questions about the future of N'Faly Dante, who is out for the season with an ACL injury. Could he be the next to go? The Blazers, on the other hand, are clearly making moves to improve their roster, with plans to promote two-way players Caleb Love and Sidy Cissoko to standard contracts.
As for Krejci, he's set to become extension-eligible in July, which could be a crucial decision for the Blazers. Meanwhile, Reath's future is uncertain, as his free agency status depends on the Hawks' plans for him.
