Imagine a world where your favorite radio station, ABC Radio Perth, has been a constant companion for over a century, but now, it's time for a significant change. A century of AM broadcasting is coming to an end, and the station is making a bold move to FM.
After 102 years on the AM band, ABC Radio Perth is now broadcasting on a brand new frequency, 102.5 FM. This move, according to station executives, is due to transmission issues that have plagued the AM signal.
Station manager Danielle Benda promises an enhanced listening experience, stating, "FM offers a richness and clarity that AM simply couldn't provide." She adds, "Perth listeners will notice a significant improvement, especially in areas with high electrical interference."
But here's where it gets controversial... The switch to FM is part of a larger plan by the Australian Communications and Media Authority. ABC Radio National will also move to 103.3 FM, and NewsRadio will simulcast on 104.1 FM while continuing its AM broadcast at 585 AM to meet legal obligations for broadcasting Federal Parliament proceedings.
And this is the part most people miss... The move to FM doesn't affect ABC Radio's regional services, which will remain on AM, nor its digital and TV services.
So, what do you think? Is this a step forward for ABC Radio Perth, or are there potential drawbacks to this change? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
